Artist statement
Growing up there was the myth that if a person is “left-brained” they are more analytical and logical whereas those who are “right-brained” are creative, visual, and emotional. Although a myth, I always considered myself to be a right-brained person. For this reason, I always pictured myself pursuing a career in the arts. However, I have been unable to deny that part of me is “left-brained”. Rather than art, I am choosing to pursue a career in nursing in hopes of one day integrating my interests and degrees in a creative way. My education has been the center of my core values for most of my life and this piece magnifies the most important tool a student can harness; their brain. This layered glass panel piece exhibits MRI images of my brain. Each panel reveals a sliced portion of my brain etched into glass. When layered together, the piece appears three-dimensional and showcases my combined interests in art and medicine.
To create this sculpture, I used Adobe Photoshop to outline sliced sections of my brain from MRI images. These images are etched into glass and layered to create a 3D effect. The sculptural base includes LED lights which illuminate the glass panels from the bottom.
